How to Get an Economic Injury Disaster Loan Grant
Economic Injury Disaster Loan grant is designed specifically for businesses and low-income areas that have been particularly hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Several non-profit organizations and small businesses have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. They seek financial assistance to deal with the economic ripple effects. When Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funds run out, the pandemic-modified Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program comes to the rescue. The CARES Act EIDL grant is available to all applying businesses even if they do not participate in the loan program.
Economic Injury Disaster Loan Grant – Overview
The US Small Business Administration (SBA) provide funds through the EIDL program to organizations during federally declared disasters. The COVID-19 national emergency increased the popularity of EIDL that served as a means to meet the needed capital.
The COVID-19 EIDL program, announced by the SBA originally scheduled to end December 31, 2020, extended through December 31, 2021, with the passage of the Consolidated Appropriations Act (CAA), 2021.
The SBA announced EIDL loan limit increased to $500,000, up from $150,000. Therefore, SBA started the process to request an increase under the new EIDL calculations.
The SBA offers an applicant’s online portals, which automates much of the process. One can also request an increase via email at [email protected] An applicant is required to fill in the required details.
- Subject line – Mention the subject line – EIDL Increase Request for [insert 10-digit application number.
- The body includes loan number, application number, business name, business owner name(s), business address, and phone number.
- Do not include any attachment. The SBA will reach out if they require additional information or verification.
Economic Injury Disaster Loan Grant – EIDL Targeted Grant
The SBA announced EIDL Targeted Grants on January 19, 2021, for those that applied for an SBA EIDL grant before December 27, 2020. This grant program offers funds to businesses in low-income communities suffering a 30% decline in gross receipts over eight weeks. The application deadline for this program will be December 31, 2021.
EIDL Targeted Grant Eligibility
The following applications are considered to receive EIDL targeted grants.
- Any non-profit organizations as well as a for-profit business, including independent contractors, sole proprietors, and self-employed persons.
- Real estate investment firms, if the real property is being held for investment purposes
- An organization with 300 or fewer employees, located in a designated low-income community
- Been in operation as of January 31, 2020
- Demonstrate economic loss of 30%+ in any eight weeks between March 2, 2020, and December 17, 2021, compared to a comparable eight weeks in 2019.
EIDL Targeted Grant Application Process
The SBA notifies the grant recipients receiving less than $10k and those who applied for a grant after funding had been depleted. Potentially eligible applicants are divided into:
- Businesses that received an EIDL Advance of less than $10k. The SBA started the process of reaching out to these businesses. However, it can take weeks for all businesses to receive an invitation email.
- Businesses that applied for an EIDL loan before December 27, 2020, and did not receive any Advance due to the depletion of the grant funding.
- Businesses that applied for an EIDL loan after December 27, 2020. If there is excess funding, this group might be considered.
The application undergoes the following steps:
- The eligible group will receive an email from [email protected], and an invitation to submit COVID-19 Targeted EIDL Advance application. Through the dedicated link, an applicant is required to fill in the details.
- The application should be then submitted. An applicant will then receive a request from the SBA to permit to pull the 2019 tax transcript from the IRS.
- After giving the permission, log into the EIDL account, go to the “Targeted Advanced” section, and click on “Submit for Processing”.
Economic Injury Disaster Loan Grant – Supplemental Targeted Grant
There is an option to request the Supplemental grant in the new Targeted Grant applications sent out after April 21, 2021.
To be eligible, they must:
- Demonstrate that they suffered a 50% decline in gross receipts over eight weeks
- Have ten or fewer employees
- Have already received the EIDL Targeted Grant.
There is no application for this grant; instead, the SBA will reach out to EIDL Targeted applicants, informing the next steps. A maximum of $15,000 grant is allowable, combining both programs.
