The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers specially adapted housing grants primarily for physical disabilities due to service-related injuries.

This grant is aimed at veterans and service members with specific service-related injuries to help them buy or change homes so that it meets their specific needs.

This grant may be used to remodel the house and add ramps or wider doorways for wheelchair access.

What is a Specially Adapted Housing Grant?

A specially adapted housing (SAH) grant is meant for service members and US Army veterans to enjoy a hassle-free and liberating life. For instance, a wheelchair-friendly home can provide a mode of independent living to war veterans which might not be possible otherwise.

The present maximum limit of this grant is around US$ 100,896. However, the maximum grant amount money is adjusted annually, so you are requested to visit the official VA website and check for the current maximum grant limit under “Home leans” and “Adapted Housing”.

The VA offers specially adapted housing grants to help veterans with severe physical disabilities modify or construct homes to meet their adaptive needs.

Eligibility for the VA’s specially adapted housing grant is based on service-connected physical disabilities, as detailed below:

  • Loss of, or loss of use of, both legs (depending on the aid of a wheelchair, canes, crutches or braces for mobility)
  • Blindness in both eyes with 20/20 visual acuity or lower in the other eye despite the use of the corrective lens.
  • Loss of, or loss of use of, one leg and residuals of organic injury or disease OR loss of, or loss of use of, one arm which affects the balance and ability to move without assistance.
  • Loss of, or loss of use of, both arms at or over the elbows.
  • Severe burn injury

Apart from this, there is another type of housing grant for war veterans suffering from service-related injuries and needing artificial aid to move around.

What is a Special Housing Adaptation Grant?

The Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grant for veterans is meant to help increase their mobility in their residences.

This is a smaller grant, with a maximum grant limit of around $22,444 (check the VA website for a revaluated maximum limit, as it is deemed to be adjusted annually).

A service member or veteran from the US armed forces is eligible for the special housing adaptation (SHA) grant from the VA if they are suffering from specific service-related disabilities or injuries, which include:

  • Loss of, or loss of use of, both arms below the elbow or loss of hands.
  • Certain breathing and respiratory injuries
  • Severe burn injuries

If you think you are eligible for the specially adapted housing grant or the special housing adaptation (SHA) grant from the VA, you may be able to receive the grant money up to three times.

According to your specific special needs, the recipient of the grant has the freedom to use as little or as much of the grant money during the current year.

It is advisable to leave a portion of the grant money untouched so that it can come into use later on in the future.
