IVF Grants in Iowa – IVF Process and Steps

IVF is a form of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and the most common form of fertility treatment. It is the process in which a woman’s eggs and a man’s sperm are mixed in a laboratory dish. Sometimes, even a single sperm is injected into a single egg to encourage fertilization. The fertilized embryo is then placed into a woman’s body that leads to pregnancy.

The cost of an IVF cycle depends on the type of procedure and medications. Here is the step-by-step procedure of one cycle of IVF.

Step 1 – It includes ovarian stimulation through fertility drugs. These drugs mature multiple eggs within 7-10 days. In this step, a woman undergoes several vaginal ultrasound examinations and blood work, monitoring the development of ovarian follicles and hormone levels. Once follicles are ready, Luteinizing hormone (Lh)and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) are given, causing egg maturation.

Step 2 – After the final injection, the eggs are retrieved within 35 to 37 hours by transvaginal ultrasound aspiration. A needle-attached ultrasound probe is inserted in the vagina that retrieves eggs from the follicles.

Step 3 – When achieving fertilization is difficult, ICSI (injecting the sperm into the egg) is often recommended.

Step 4 – After egg retrieval, fertilized eggs divide into 2-4 cell embryos. Embryos normally developed within five days after fertilization are called blastocysts.

Step 5 – Usually, after five days of fertilization, high-quality embryos are placed into the woman’s uterus. The patients can store the remaining embryos for future cycles by cryopreservation. It makes future cycles less expensive and much simpler as there is no need for the ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval process.
